A Widow’s Struggle to Earn a Living
Farida Khatun is a vulnerable widow from PataKhali village in Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira District. Following the death of her husband, she has faced numerous challenges in managing her daily life. With her children not providing the care and support she needs, she has been left to take responsibility for her own livelihood.
Despite these difficult circumstances, Farida has not given up. Rather than depending entirely on others, she has been trying to earn her living through her own hard work and determination.
Selling Fabric to Support Herself
Farida travels from village to village selling fabric, particularly sheet kapor, to generate an income. This small trading activity is her means of meeting everyday expenses and maintaining some financial independence.
However, running even a small business requires working capital. Without sufficient money to purchase the necessary fabric, Farida was unable to maintain an adequate supply of products. Her limited financial resources were making it increasingly difficult to continue her work and earn a regular income.
For someone already struggling with the challenges of widowhood and financial insecurity, this lack of capital created another significant obstacle.
DSF Steps Forward to Support Her Livelihood
Recognizing Farida Khatun’s circumstances and her determination to earn through honest work, Do Something Foundation (DSF) extended financial assistance to help her purchase the fabric needed for her small business.
Through Clothing Project #1279, DSF provided the support necessary for her to replenish her stock and continue travelling to nearby villages to sell fabric.
This assistance was made possible through the generosity of AGI USA, whose contribution helped create an opportunity for a financially vulnerable woman to continue her income-generating activities.
Promoting Self-Reliance Instead of Dependency
The purpose of this initiative goes beyond providing temporary financial relief. It aims to help Farida continue an activity through which she can earn money using her own skills, effort, and initiative.
For vulnerable women, particularly those who have lost their spouses and lack family support, access to even a small amount of business capital can make a meaningful difference. It can help sustain an existing livelihood, restore confidence, and create opportunities for greater financial independence.
DSF believes that empowering people to earn their own living is an important part of sustainable humanitarian support. Instead of focusing only on immediate needs, the foundation seeks to create opportunities that help individuals stand on their own feet with dignity.
Farida Khatun’s story reminds us that behind every small business is a person’s determination to survive, support themselves, and live with dignity. With timely assistance and continued effort, she can work toward a more secure and independent future.
Sometimes, the most meaningful support is not simply giving someone a helping hand, but giving them the opportunity to earn through their own hard work.
