When floods force families from their homes, finding a safe place to stay is only the beginning of their struggle. Families living on embankments often have very limited facilities for cooking and meeting their daily needs.
Many of these displaced families prepare their meals using makeshift stoves made from bricks or mud. These simple cooking arrangements may work during dry weather, but they become difficult or completely impossible to use when it rains.
When rainwater enters the mud or brick stoves, the fuel cannot burn properly and the stove becomes unusable. For families already struggling because of flooding, this means they may be unable to cook meals for themselves and their children.
