Bringing Hope to a Struggling Mother and Her Two Daughters

Poverty can take away many things, but no child should have to live without adequate food.

This month, Do Something Foundation extended support to a vulnerable family facing severe financial hardship. The mother, abandoned by her husband who remarried elsewhere, is now solely responsible for raising her two young daughters. With no stable source of income, the family often struggles to secure enough food for daily survival.

The children frequently ask their mother for nutritious meals, but due to their difficult circumstances, she is often unable to fulfill even their most basic needs. For this family, every day is a challenge.

To help ease their burden, Do Something Foundation provided a one-month food package containing essential food items and household necessities. This support aims to ensure that the family has access to nutritious meals while offering them hope and dignity during a difficult period.

We believe that no mother should have to choose between hunger and survival, and no child should have to sleep hungry. Through the generosity of our donors and supporters, we continue to stand beside families in need across Bangladesh.

Together, we can create a more compassionate society where vulnerable families receive the support they deserve.

What once stood as a family’s only source of income was reduced to ashes by a devastating fire.

A small village shop, built through years of hard work and sacrifice, was completely destroyed overnight. With the shop gone, the family lost not only their business but also their hope for a stable future.

Recognizing their urgent need, generous supporters came forward through Do Something Foundation Together, we helped rebuild the shop, restock essential goods, and give the family a second chance to stand on their own feet.

Today, the shop is open once again. Customers have returned, income has resumed, and a family that once faced uncertainty can now look forward with confidence.

This transformation is more than rebuilding a shop—it is restoring dignity, resilience, and hope.

BABY FORMULA SUPPORT FOR A NEWBORN

Mrs. Farida Begum comes from a vulnerable low-income family. Her husband works as a day laborer and struggles to meet the family’s daily needs.

Following medical complications, Farida underwent a Caesarean section 15 days ago. To cover the cost of the operation, the family had to borrow money, placing them under further financial pressure.

The newborn baby is unable to receive sufficient breast milk and requires formula feeding. Due to their financial hardship, the family could not afford to purchase baby formula.

চার পাশ পানিতে থৈ থৈ, অথচ খাবার উপযোগী পানি নেই। ব্যাপারটা অদ্ভুত না ?
হ্যা! এটাই উপকূল অঞ্চলের নিত্য চিত্র । ১০০০-১২০০ ফুট গভীরে টিউবওয়েল স্থাপন করলেও পান যোগ্য পানি পাওয়া যায় না। চারদিকে লবনাক্ত পানি। দিন দিন পানির লবনাক্ততা বেড়েই চলছে। অন্যান্য বছরের চেয়ে এইবার সুপেয় পানির হাহাকার আরও বেশি হয়েছে । প্রচন্ড তাপদাহ, অনাবৃষ্টি, পুকুর, ডোবা সব শুকিয়ে যাওয়া, পানির স্তর নিচে নেমে যাওয়া ইত্যাদি কারণে পানির সমস্যা এখন প্রকট ।
পান যোগ্য পানি আনতে মানুষকে মাইলের পর মাইল পায়ে হেঁটে কিংবা নৌকায় করে যেতে হয় । এই দৃশ্য আমাদের নজরে আসার পর আমরা ওয়াটার ডিস্যালাইনেশন প্ল্যান্ট করার উদ্যোগ নেয় । যে প্ল্যান্টের মাধ্যমে ঘন্টায় ৫০০ লিটার লবন মুক্ত পানি পাওয়া যাবে। বেছে নেয়া হয় সাতক্ষীরা জেলার দুর্গম গাবুরা দ্বীপকে ।
এলাকাটি খুবই দুর্গম হওয়ায় কাজটি করা বেশ কষ্টসাধ্য ছিল । একটু বৃষ্টি হলেই কাজ করা অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়ত । সকল প্রতিকূলতা মোকাবেলা করে অবশেষে জনসাধারণের জন্য উম্মুক্ত হল প্ল্যান্টটি। ১৫০০০ মানুষ খাবার পানি পাবে প্লান্টটি থেকে ।

অন্ধ আব্দুর রহিম । জন্ম থেকে অন্ধ। অন্ধ মানুষ হলেও অন্যের মুখাপেক্ষী হননি কখনো । নিজে আয় করে চলেছেন। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের হাজী মোহাম্মদ মহসিন হলে খাবার সরবরাহের কাজ করতেন । বাসা থেকে রান্না করা খাবার হলে পৌঁছে দিতেন। কিন্তু মার্চে করোনা সংকটে হল বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়াতে আয়ের রাস্তা সম্পুর্ণ বন্ধ হয়ে যায় । আব্দুর রহিম ভাইয়ের চোখেমুখে অন্ধকার নেমে আসে ।
ঢাবির Md. Aman Ullah ভাই আব্দুর রহিমের ব্যাপারে আমাদের বিস্তারিত জানান । লক ডাউনের মধ্যে আব্দুর রহিমকে Do Something Foundation এর পক্ষ থেকে কিছু উপহার সামগ্রী পৌঁছে দেয়া হয় । আব্দুর রহিম ভাই ডু সামথিং ফাউন্ডেশনের পুর্নবাসন প্রকল্পের আওতায় একটা দোকান করে দেয়ার অনুরোধ জানান । রোজার মাসে তিনি অনুরোধ করেছিলেন । আব্দুর রহিমের কষ্টের কথা জানিয়ে ফেসবুকে পোস্ট দেয়ার ৩০ মিনিটের মধ্যে ১ লাখ টাকা ম্যানেজ হয়ে যায় । আজকে আব্দুর রহিমের দোকান ঘরের জন্য পুরো টাকা হস্তান্তর করা হয় ।
আব্দুর রহিম ভাই গত দুই মাস ধরে আমাদের অনুরোধ করে যাচ্ছিলেন দ্রুত দোকান করে দেয়ার জন্য । রাস্তার সাথে একটা ভালো পজিশনের দোকান পান। সাধারণত মেইন রাস্তার সাথে ভালো মানের দোকানের পজিশন খালি থাকে না । দোকানের খালি থাকার খোঁজ পাওয়ার পর থেকে প্রতিনিয়ত ফোন করেছেন । কারণ তার আশংকা ছিল দোকানের পজিশন যদি অন্য কোন ব্যক্তি নিয়ে নেন!!
বিকাশের মাধ্যমে তখন ১০০০০ টাকা পাঠিয়ে দোকানের পজিশন বুকিং করা হয় । আজকে সরাসরি আব্দুর রহিমের হাতে বাকি ৯০০০০ টাকা তুলে দেয়া হয় । ১ লাখ টাকার ৮০০০০ টাকা শুধু দোকানের এডভান্স দিতেই শেষ হবে । বাকি ২০০০০ টাকায় মালামাল ক্রয় করবেন । সেই দিক থেকে আব্দুর রহিমের হাতে আরও কিছু সহযোগিতা তুলে দিতে পারলে ভালো হতো ।
আব্দুর রহিমের গ্রামের বাড়ি মুন্সীগঞ্জ৷ থাকেন ঢাকার কামারাংগীর চর । সরাসরি তার দোকানে গিয়ে অথবা আমাদের মাধ্যমে সহযোগিতা করতে পারেন । আব্দুর রহিমরা সংগ্রামী মানুষ । কোন প্রতিবন্ধকতার কাছে হার মানেন নি। ভিডিও দেখার পর আব্দুর রহিমের জন্য আপনার মনে একটা সফট কর্ণার তৈরি হবে নিশ্চিত ..

কোন বাড়িতে হাটু পানি, কোন বাড়িতে কোমর পানি । চুলা ডুবে গেছে । টিউবওয়েল ডুবে গেছে পানিতে । রান্না করতে পারছে না ।
এসব অসহায় মানুষের জন্য আমরা রান্নাকরা খাদ্য বিতরণ করছি । এ পর্যন্ত ২০০০ মানুষের মাঝে রান্না করা খাবার বিতরণ করা হয়েছে। নিত্য প্রয়োজনীয় বাজার বিতরণ করা হয়েছে ৫০০ পরিবারের মধ্যে। উত্তরাঞ্চল এ পানি বৃদ্ধি অব্যাহত রয়েছে । তাই আমাদের খাদ্য বিতরণ কর্মসূচী এখনো চলমান রয়েছে।

করোনা ভাইরাস মহামারিতে অসহায় হয়ে পড়েছে দেশের নিম্ন ও মধ্যম আয়ের মানুষ। একদিকে ক্ষুদার কষ্ট, অন্য দিকে করোনা সংক্রমনের ভয়। লক ডাউনের কারনে দিনে এনে দিনে খাওয়া মানুষের দুর্দশা যে কোন বিভেকবান মানুষকে নাড়িয়ে তুলেছিল। করোনায় ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ এসকল পরিবারের পাশে দাড়িয়েছি। এ পর্যন্ত ১০০০০ পরিবারকে খাদ্য সহয়তা পৌছে দেই আমরা। সারাদেশে আমাদের খাদ্য বিতরন কর্মসূচি চলে। এখনো আমাদের খাদ্য বিতরন কর্মসূচী অভ্যাহত রয়েছে।

An Afternoon With Prof. Dr. Halida Hanum Akhter

Distinguished Physician Halida Hanum Akhter visited ” O AA KA KHA ” school savar branch on 24 September, 2019. Dr Halida joined with the students and volunteers on a programme ” An afternoon with Professor Halida Hanum Akhter “. She spent there several hours and delivered valuable speech to the audience . The programme was started with the National Anthem of Bangladesh . Students performed a nice cultural session for the honor of Professor Halida . They performed with dance, song, poem recitation etc. Halida observed the various activities of the school . She praised the vocational activities of the school .

Dr Halida Hanum Akhter is a reproductive health epidemiologist with over 30 years of national and international experience . She is a medical graduate and obtained Membership of College of Physician and Surgeon (MCPS) in OB/GYN , MPH and Dr. PH from Johns Hopkins University following which , as a Rockefeller Fellow , she served as Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer (EIS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta , GA. Dr. Akhter has served over 20 years on many committees of WHO Geneva , International Medical Advisory Panel of IPPF London , steering committee on Alternate Business Model of Packard Foundation , and several others . She served in the Board of Directors of Family Health International and PATH and has participated in evaluations of large reproductive health programs of WHO/HRP , UNFPA , USAID , the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation/IPPF , and the Ford Foundation.

Dr. Akhter was Founding CEO of the Bangladesh Institute of Research for Promotion of Essential and Reproductive Health Technologies (BIRPERHT) for 16 years ; she was Director General of the Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) , and Founder of a grassroots-level organization (Society for Health Promotion Links) that trains women to become community maternity practitioners in rural Bangladesh .

Dr. Akhter has received an Outstanding JHU Alumni Award and is a member of the Dean’s Alumni Council of the School . She has also received the Justus Liebig University’s Developing Country Award in 1995 and the prestigious United Nation’s Population Award in 2006 (Laureate in the Individual Category , 2006).

Dr. Akhter was the Chief of Party on the USAID-DFID NGO Health Service Delivery Project , a Senior Country Representative with Pathfinder International during 2013-18.

Dr. Akhter currently is a faculty of the Center for Human Nutrition, Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health , Baltimore, Maryland.

Wheelchair Distribution – 2019

Ashraful and Maryam of Erandah village of Raiganj police station in Sirajganj district. Ashraful and Miriam are two brothers and sisters. Ashraful is 35 years old and Miriam is 32 years younger than they are. Ashraful and Maryam did not finish that young age. They rode on mom’s lap or rubbed in the ground. There were dangers that could happen if there were sharp sacks in the ground. But there was no way! That means buying a wheelchair. The report is disseminated which comes to our attention. After our attention, we contact different aspirants. Immediately Dr. Nasrin Jahan Mam and Yusuf brother came forward. Ashraful and Miriam were very happy to get the wheelchair and prayed for the two wheelchair providers. We are going to take care of us with a lot of hard work. Even though we have trouble getting wheelchairs, we will eat? There is no end to the idea of ​​eating. We may be satisfied with the beautiful pictures of distribution. But there are many sacrifices behind it. It is not possible to buy a wheelchair and carry it to the rickshaw as a laborer, then to courier, and again to bear the burden of the workers. They believe that Bangladesh will be changed by them for free.
