Five Goats Bring New Hope to a Cancer-Affected Family in Sirajganj

For families living in poverty, illness can make an already difficult life even harder. When the primary earning member of a family becomes seriously ill, maintaining even basic household expenses can become a major challenge.

Kamal, a resident of Gandhail in Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj, has been struggling with oral cancer. The prolonged illness and cost of treatment have left him financially devastated. His health condition also prevents him from undertaking physically demanding work.

Despite his illness, Kamal has been trying to earn a living by selling dried fish. He travels around the local area carrying approximately two kilograms of dried fish at a time and sells it from place to place.

However, the income from selling such a small quantity of dried fish is not enough to support his family. At the same time, because of his health condition, he is unable to take on heavier or more physically demanding work.

With his family's financial situation becoming increasingly difficult, a sustainable source of income was urgently needed.

Recognising Kamal's circumstances and his limited ability to work, the Do Something Foundation (DSF) stepped forward with livelihood support.

DSF has provided five goats to Kamal under its income-generation initiative. The goats are intended to provide an opportunity for the family to build a small livestock-based source of income over time.

Livestock support can help vulnerable families create an income-generating asset that can grow gradually. For Kamal and his family, these five goats represent an opportunity to strengthen their livelihood while reducing their dependence on physically demanding work.

DSF hopes that this support will help ease the family's financial hardship and provide Kamal with a more sustainable means of supporting his household despite the challenges created by his illness.

Through its Income Generation Programme, the Do Something Foundation continues to provide practical livelihood support to vulnerable families, helping them develop opportunities for greater financial stability and self-reliance.
